Assoc. Prof. Mehregan Mahdavi

BEng MEng PhD(Computer Science)

Mehregan has more than 20 years of experience in higher education teaching, research and management and is currently an Associate Professor and Campus Academic Manager at Asia Pacific International College (APIC) in Sydney. He had several academic and management roles prior to joining APIC including Director of Data Science at S P Jain School of Global Management and Director of Learning and Teaching at Victoria University Sydney. He also holds a Visiting Fellow position in the Department of Computing, Macquarie University. Mehregan’s understanding of higher education sector together with his teaching, research and management experience has given him the ability to work effectively in senior academic and management roles in higher education.

Background and Experience
Prior to joining APIC, Mehregan worked as an Associate Professor and Director of Data Science at S P Jain School of Global Management where his role was to establish the newly proposed Bachelor of Data Science course.
Before that, he worked as Director of Learning and Teaching at Victoria University Sydney campus where he was responsible for the academic operation of the campus and leading the academic team including course coordinators, academic services, learning support and lecturers. This included overseeing day to day operation of the team such as timetabling, student consultation/support, communications, quality assurance, new pathways and courses, staff professional development, as well as contributing to strategic planning of the campus in-line with existing growth plans.
Mehregan initially came to Sydney in 2000 to complete his PhD in the area of Web Data Management at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, UNSW. After finishing his PhD, he joined Macquarie University as a Research Fellow and worked on a R & D project that aimed to provide a middleware component for sharing digital information among Australian universities.
Mehregan then moved overseas and worked as a lecturer at the University of Guilin for seven years, three of which he was Head of Department of Computer Science & Engineering. He also contributed to different committees and provided consultation to external bodies.
He returned to Sydney in 2012 and started working at UNSW as a Visiting Fellow until he joined Victoria University Sydney as an Academic Coordinator and later as Director of Learning and Teaching.
During his career, Mehregan has taught many postgraduate and undergraduate subjects in different universities and institutes in Australia and overseas and successfully supervised several research students.
He has published several book chapters, Journal articles and conference papers and has been an editorial board member in different journals and a program committee member in numerous conferences. His research area includes recommender systems, big data, and e-learning.
Mehregan is currently a member of IEEE, ACM and ACS.
