Research and Scholarship

Research and Scholarship

At the Asia Pacific International College (APIC) we see quality research and scholarship as essential to ensuring a high-quality learning and teaching environment that meets the needs of staff and students.

Our Students

For our students, the capacity to locate, select and evaluate information from a range of sources to ensure the currency of their knowledge base, and the ability to find novel and effective solutions for anticipated and unexpected challenges are key attributes of APIC graduates. These graduate attributes are aligned with the key overarching APIC curriculum themes of evidence-based decision making and real-world application.

For APIC academic staff, opportunities to engage in discipline-based research and in scholarship of teaching and learning are essential for maintaining currency of the curriculum. Our academic team are committed to applied, contemporary research and scholarship.

Our Goals

To support high quality applied research to address current, real-world issues by promoting a culture of research and scholarship at APIC, through activities such as:

  • The APIC Research and Scholarship Seminar Series
  • The APIC Small Research Grant Scheme to support staff research
  • The APIC Conference Support Fund to encourage students to present their work at professional and academic conferences

Small Research Grant Scheme

The Asia Pacific International College (APIC) Small Research Grants (SRG) scheme is available to all APIC academic staff (permanent, contract and sessional). The SRG scheme aims to enhance a culture of research and scholarship at APIC. Grants are available to support research in the substantive disciplines of APIC as well as research into learning and teaching.

Grants can be awarded to individual researchers however priority is given to projects that:

  • Answer important applied research questions
  • Involve internal and external collaborations

APIC SRGs will normally be for a maximum of $7500.00 although it is expected that many projects will require less funding. Grants that involve cross-disciplinary collaboration or collaboration with external partners may be up to $10,000.00.

Decisions about the award of grants is based on merit (Click here to download Application form ).

Funding may be used for a range of purposes including, but not restricted to, purchase of software and equipment, research assistance, consumables, and participant incentives / reimbursement.

Funding of any project requiring human research participation is contingent on the applicant(s) obtaining appropriate ethical approval, either through the APIC Research Ethics Committee (REC) for negligible or low risk research or from a fully constituted Human Research Ethics Committee for any project deemed to be above negligible or low risk.

It is a condition of the award of an APIC SRG that:

  • grant recipients complete a Progress Report Form annually
  • any substantial changes to how the budget is expended and/or the methodology of the grant are approved by the Chair of the APIC Research and Scholarship Committee who may seek advice from other members of that Committee. If the project involves human participants, then changes to methodology must be approved by the ethics committee that originally approved the project.

Student Conference Support Scheme

Support for Student Presentations at Conferences

Asia Pacific international College has some limited funds to support students who wish to present the results of research conducted at APIC at conferences. The funds can be used towards the costs of registration at the conference, an air fare to and from the venue and / or accommodation to a maximum of $300. Applicants must be current students or recent graduates of the College (within twelve (12) months of completion of the degree) who have a paper accepted for presentation at a recognised professional or academic conference.

It is a requirement of funding that the student is identified as being affiliated with Asia Pacific International College in all correspondence with the conference organisers and will be listed in the official program as being affiliated with Asia Pacific International College. The student and supervisor must also be prepared to submit the abstract and information about the conference to the marketing section of the College, that it may be used in any information campaign about the College and group that may be deemed appropriate.

Application Process

Students should consult with their supervisor regarding the possible presentation and conference and they should, together with the supervisor, prepare an abstract according to the requirements of the conference which they wish to attend. The acceptance of the abstract for presentation is a condition of application for funding.

While the supervisor would normally be a co-author on the conference presentation, the student must attend the conference and present the paper to be eligible for College funding.

To apply for funding the student must:

Complete the application form with all requested information and attach:proof that the paper has been accepted for presentation at the conference (such as correspondence from the conference organisers)
Documents to justify requested funding (such as information about registration costs or travel costs).
Submit the form through the website OR download and complete an editable PDF copy of the form and email with attachments to [email protected].
The application will be considered by the College Research and Scholarship Committee. Applications must be made in a timely manner that enables a proper consideration of the abstract and the value and importance of the conference proposed. Applicants will receive a response within ten days of the application being received.
