Graduate Certificate in Project Management (GradCertPM)

The objective of the Graduate Certificate in Project Management is to develop a superior grade of project and program manager who can assume an effective role in the planning, delivery, and management of a range of projects and programs within government, business and industry. All studies are focused on projects and programs in the selected industry contexts. The thrust of the program is to impart new perspectives that shift the thinking focus of students and practitioners from normative to transformative state. It will also embed the concepts of sustainability as a dimension of managerial decisions and processes.

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Project Management will have:

• Specialised knowledge of the theories, concepts, and principles of business and project management that include the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in the disciplines and professional areas of business, project management and IS.

Skills

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Project Management will have:

• Cognitive skills to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge from a range of business, industry, and academic sources, and to identify and provide solutions to business areas such as customer service, organisational methods, technologies and processes;
• Cognitive skills to think critically, to evaluate new, dynamic and complex project management and other business risks and human resource management requirements, and to generate complex applicable concepts and solutions;
• Specialised technical and creative skills in project planning, project budgets, project timelines and human resources as required for specific projects;
• Communication skills to clearly and coherently articulate theoretical concepts relating to the analysis, planning, design and evaluation of approaches to customer service, sales processes, and ethical and professional values; and
• Communication skills to impart complex knowledge and to contribute to an independent exposition of ideas and knowledge when working in a business or project team, and when collaborating with colleagues around the world.

Application of knowledge and skills

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Project Management will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:

• By making high level, independent, judgements in a range of technical or management functions in varied specialised contexts such as the implementation of new finance structures, customer service models, strategy and acquisition techniques;
• Through initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating broad functions of business and project management within specialised, technical or creative contexts such as human resource management, information technology, procurement, new products and service developments, and IT functions;
• With responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional practice and ethical standards, and for all aspects of the work or function of others within the broad parameters of business operations such as research, analysis, planning, implementation, review and performance management, within a team or autonomously, leading to quality, accuracy, and timely delivery.

The Course Structure for this degree is shown below. The Graduate Certificate in Project Management is awarded after completing 5 core units (27 credit points).

To be eligible to graduate from the Graduate Diploma of Project Management, students must successfully complete five core units: CPD1102; SBM1101; SBM1107; SBM1201; SBM1202.

Candidates who select to exit from the Masters of Business and Project Management with the Graduate Certificate in Project Management may be permitted to substitute SBM1103 for SBM1107 subject to approval by the Course Coordinator or the Dean.

Please note: Not all units are offered in every semester.

Domestic and Offshore International students
The course may be studied in full-time and/or part time modes, allowing students complete flexibly. The normal full-time duration is 1 year (2 semesters).

The number of units undertaken in each semester can be varied to suit individuals, subject to the total duration of candidature not exceeding 2 years (4 semesters), and subject to any conditions as advised at the time of enrolment.

Onshore International students
The CRICOS-registered duration is 1 year of full-time study (2 semesters). Please note the part-time mode is not available to holders of a student visa, who are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or who are not an Australian permanent resident, or who are a temporary resident of Australia.

Delivery Method
All units of study are hosted on the College’s Online Learning System (OLS), and lectures are generally delivered face-to-face for campus-based students. All tutorials are also conducted under close academic supervision. Students have uninterrupted access to course information, library, and other learning resources, and learn from a highly qualified faculty, many of whom have considerable industry experience. The OLS manages the whole process; it has a formalised structure, framework and processes, and regulates the entire delivery process in each semester, providing 24-hour access to course information and learning resources.

APIC's e-Library hosts a collection of specialised papers and presentation slides often not found in the online databases, and includes a mix of academic and industry-focused studies in project, business and general management. The collection is always expanding as more resources are obtained.

English language entry requirements

All applicants from a non-English speaking background applying to any postgraduate course at APIC must satisfy the following additional English language requirements:

Applicants who do not meet APIC’s English proficiency requirements can be made a conditional offer with a requirement to complete an approved intensive English language course and meet the required standard prior to their commencing their APIC award course.
